Set Free by God’s Love: Receiving Before You Strive

There is a freedom that comes when the love and goodness of God become more real to us than our fears.
Many believers want to love God more. We want to trust Him more deeply, obey Him more consistently, and walk with Him more faithfully. But sometimes, in our desire to love Him well, we begin in the wrong place.
We try to produce love.
We try to originate devotion.
We try to prove that we are worthy of His goodness.
But the Christian life does not begin with what we give to God. It begins with what we receive from Him.
Scripture tells us:
“We love Him because He first loved us.”— 1 John 4:19
That is the order.
He loves first.
We receive.
Then we respond.
We Were Designed to Receive First
We are not designed to be originators. We are designed to be recipients who express and display what we have received.
This matters because so much of our exhaustion comes from trying to produce what only God can supply.
We try to love without first receiving His love.
We try to serve without first being strengthened.
We try to pour out without first being filled.
Then we wonder why we feel burned out, anxious, discouraged, or spiritually dry.
You cannot dispense what you have not received.
Or perhaps more accurately, you cannot consistently dispense what you refuse to receive.
The love you want to show God is the fruit of the love you have received from God.
The love you want to show others is the overflow of the love that has first filled your own heart.
Even the way you love yourself must begin with seeing how deeply and completely God loves you.
If you are not full of God’s love, you will struggle to love God, yourself, and others in a healthy way.
God’s Goodness Starts With Him
One of the most freeing truths we can ever understand is this:
God’s goodness starts with Him.
It does not start with our behavior.
It does not start with our performance.
It does not start with how consistent, disciplined, prayerful, or impressive we have been.
God is good because He is good.
God is love because He is love.
If we did not exist, He would still be good. He would still be love. His character is not dependent on our response.
That means His goodness toward us is not fragile. It is not easily withdrawn. It is not hanging by a thread, waiting for one mistake to cancel it.
God’s goodness is non-negotiable.

You Were Loved Before You Performed
Before you were born, Jesus died for you.
Before you knew how to pray, He made a way for you.
Before you had any works to present, He had already extended grace.
Before you could demonstrate devotion, He had already shown love.
The authority, favor, grace, and peace we now receive in Christ did not begin with our goodness.
They began with His.
So why do we sometimes act as if we must now earn what He freely gave?
Why do we think we must demonstrate something impressive before we can receive from Him?
Why do we believe His pleasure in us is triggered by our deeds?
God’s delight in you is not a reaction to your performance. It is a decision flowing from His love.
This does not mean our actions do not matter.
Of course they do.
Love responds.
Grace teaches.
Relationship transforms.
But our actions are not the root of God’s goodness toward us.
His love is the root.
Our obedience is the fruit.
Freedom From Fear and Mistrust
When we do not understand the love of God, fear begins to fill the gaps.
We fear that God is displeased with us.
We fear that He is withholding good from us.
We fear that He is waiting for us to fail.
We fear that if life is difficult, it must mean He has turned away.
But the more we dwell on His love and goodness, the more fear loses its grip.
Perfect love casts out fear because fear cannot remain where the heart is convinced of love.
When you know God loves you freely, you stop relating to Him as though He is unpredictable. When you know His goodness is rooted in His character, you stop interpreting every hard moment as evidence that He is against you.
Trust becomes easier when love becomes clear.
Freedom From Striving
A soul that has not received love will always strive.
It strives to be noticed.
It strives to be accepted.
It strives to be enough.
It strives to earn peace.
But the love of God quiets that striving.
When His love overwhelms your soul, you no longer live from the pressure to prove yourself. You begin to live from the peace of being already loved.
This is where rest begins.
Not laziness.
Not passivity.
Not indifference.
Rest.
The deep inner settling that comes from knowing, “I am loved by God, and His goodness toward me does not depend on my ability to hold everything together.”
Receiving His Love Changes How We Live
Some people worry that emphasizing God’s love will make believers careless.
I believe the opposite is true.
When we truly receive the love of God, we are changed by it.
Love makes obedience beautiful.
Love makes worship natural.
Love makes repentance safe.
Love makes trust possible.
A person who is afraid of God may obey outwardly, but they will struggle to draw near.
A person who knows they are loved will run toward Him, even when they fall.
God’s love does not weaken holiness. It makes holiness possible from the inside out.

Let His Love Overwhelm Your Soul
If you want to love God more, let Him love you first.
Sit with His goodness.
Meditate on His kindness.
Remember what He gave before you ever had anything to offer.
Allow His love to fill the places in you that have been shaped by fear, mistrust, sadness, and unrest.
This is not about you trying harder to feel better.
It is about turning your attention to who He has always been.
God is good.
God is love.
God is for you.
And because His love begins with Him, you can trust that He will be faithful to you — not because you performed perfectly, but because He chose to love you.
Let that truth settle deeply.
Let it quiet your fear.
Let it heal your mistrust.
Let it bring peace to your soul.
And let it set you free.
I love you,
Oyin.
